Tama Library

Tokyo Metropolitan Tama Library

In May of 2009, the Tokyo Metropolitan Tama Library launched the Tokyo Magazine Bank, a service dedicated to providing magazines and journals. It is the first public library in Japan to offer such a service. The Tokyo Magazine Bank has approximately 19,000 titles of academic and general magazines and journals covering a wide range of subject matter, as well as a collection of the inaugural issue of various magazines.

An additional feature of the Tama Library is the service aimed at children and Young Adults.

The Library provides a variety of books for young people ranging in age from infants to high school students.

Use of Library Materials

Open-shelf materials

  • Materials held in reading rooms can be freely taken anywhere in the library for reading.

Closed-stack materials

  • To use materials held in closed stacks, please make requests through the library's online catalogue.
  • Requests to see newspapers by filling out the Request Form for Materials provided in the library. Submit the form to the Issue/Return Counter.
  • To enter the open-stack storage room, make a request at the Issue/Return Counter.
  • Individual users are not allowed to take materials out of the library.

Tokyo Magazine Bank

The "Tokyo Magazine Bank, "this magazine collection includes over 6,000 different magazines published in the past one year. They are available in the magazine area and the open stacks. In addition, back issues around 19,000 different magazines are stored in the closed stacks. These archives can be used an entire magazine series together.

Services for Children and Young Adults

Only a part of the materials that is housed in the Library is accessible on open shelves. All other materials are kept in the closed stacks.

Photocopy Service

  • Photocopying services are available for the materials in the Tokyo Metropolitan Library collection. All photocopying is subject to copyright law and other restrictions.
  • Please make photocopying requests at the Photocopy Service Counter (1st floor).

Reception Hours

Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, Sunday, and holidays 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Photocopying requests must be made at least 30 minute before the library closes.
  • Please submit your request early to avoid congestion of photocopy requests at closing time of the service.

How to apply

  1. Enter necessary information on the photocopy request form.
    (The form may be printed out from the book search terminal.)
  2. Submit the request form and the material to be copied at the Photocopy Counter.

Coin-operated copier

  1. Collect the copies yourself.
  2. Have your request checked by the library staff at the Photocopy Counter.

Copying service by library staff

  1. Take your number and wait to be called.
  2. If your number appears on the electric message board, receive your copies and pay at the Photocopy Counter.

Materials that can be photocopied with the coin-operated copier

Some books and materials may be photocopied with the coin-operated copier.

  • Books and materials on open shelves (restrictions may apply for some materials)
  • Magazines issued within the past 10 years (not applicable to journal bindings), etc.

Important points of note when photocopying

  • Photocopying is allowed within the scope designated by the Copyright Act, etc.
    • Photocopying is restricted to 1/2 or less of a single copyrighted work. Please note that a map, a musical score, a single academic paper in a compilation, etc., are regarded individual copyrighted works.
    • When photocopying a magazine, photograph, design drawing, map, painting or other materials, please check in advance at the General Information Counter.
  • One copy is allowed per person. Multiple copies of a single book or material are not allowed.
  • Photocopying is not allowed for newspapers of the day or latest magazines.
  • Photocopying is not allowed for materials that do not belong to the library, such as privately owned materials.
  • Partial enlarging or partial reducing is not possible when photocopying.
  • The number of pages to be photocopied may be restricted to 50 or less, if there are many requests to be processed.
  • Copies must be picked up on the same day as a rule.

Use of PCs and Wi-Fi

  • You may use your own laptop at all seats in the reading rooms and café lounge.
  • FREE Wi-Fi TOKYO (Free wireless LAN service) is also available.
