From the middle of the Edo period, this area, originally written in various different characters with similar rendering started to be written "Nippori"in chinese rendering and called "Higurashi-no-Sato (an alternative rendering of the Chinese characters in Nippori)." As a famous spot of Edo where you could enjoy sakura viewing and listening to insects, this place featured in a great number of Nishiki-e paitings and guides to famous spots.
