One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Twelve Kumano Shrines at Tsunohazu
Painted by Utagawa Hiroshige I 1856 (Ansei 3) Tokyo Shiryō Collection 3356-C2

The Twelve Kumano Shrines at Tsunohazu are said to have been founded during the Ōei era (1394 to 1428) by Suzuki Kurō, who called upon the Twelve Shrine Gongen from the three montains of Kumano in his homeland Kishū. During the Kyōhō era (1716 to 1735), the 8th shogun Yoshimune began to worship there upon his falconry expeditions and a large number of teahouses were built around the pond, making it a scenic spot in the western environs of Edo.
