Shinobazu-no-Ike Hasumi from "Guide to Famous Spots of Edo Vol.5"
Compiled by Saitō Chōshū, Painted by Hasegawa Settan 1834-1836 (Tempō 5 to Tempō 7) Kaga Collection 256

It is said that Shinobazu-no-Ike pond, located within the temple grounds of Ueno's Kan'ei-ji, was the first lotus pond in Edo. The lotuses were not withered by drought and the red and white flowers which bloomed in profusion during the summer, the best time to view lotus, delighted the eyes of everyone that visited the place.
