Fifty-three stages on the Tōkaidō Highway-Nihonbashi bridge
Painted by Utagawa Hiroshige I 1833-1834 (Tempō 4 to Tempō 5) Tokyo Shiryō Collection 061-C3-1

A famous work depicting Nihonbashi, the starting point of the Tōkaidō Highway which links Edo to Kyoto. In addition to the scene of Daimyō Processions for Sankin Kōtai (alternate attendance system) departing Edo early in the morning, the scene of groups shouldering poles setting out to sell fish after having stocked up at the riverside fish-market on the opposite bank is also depicted to convey the early morning energy of Nihonbashi, the most prosperous in Edo.
