Yushima-Tenjin is the shrine that enshrines Sugawara Michizane known as deity of scholarship. Along with Kannō-ji Temple in Yanaka and Meguro Fudō, it was popular with the populace as one of the 'Edo-Santomi', three shrines that sold official shogunate tomikuji tickets (lottery in the Edo period).
