Zōjō-ji Temple flourished in the Edo period as the headquarters of the Jōdo Buddhism in the Kanto Region and also as the family temple of the Tokugawa Shogunate House. Six Shoguns (the 2nd Shogun Hidetada, 6th Ienobu, 7th Ietsugu, 9th Ieshige, 12th Ieyoshi and 14th Iemochi) are buried in the temple.
