Pilgrimage to the Mt. Fuji on the First day of the Sixth month from "Guide to Famous Spots of Edo Vol.5"
Compiled by Saitō Chōshū, Painted by Hasegawa Settan 1834-1836 (Tempō 5 to Tempō 7) Kaga Collection 256

Mount Fuji could be clearly seen from the town of Edo and the people of Edo held it in great admiration. For the "mountain opening" on June 1, each house would light incense under their eaves and worship the mountain from afar, and the people of Edo would gather in Sengen Shrine in the town. Models of the mountain known as Fujizuka were constructed in evey place so that those who were unable to go to the real mountain could still go on a Fuji pilgrimage by climbing up a miniature version.
