Takanawa Ushi-machi (ox-town) from "Guide to Famous Spots of Edo Vol.1"
Compiled by Saitō Chōshū, Painted by Hasegawa Settan 1834-1836 (Tempō 5 to Tempō 7) Kaga Collection 256

In principle, the two types of vehicles that people were permitted to use were an ox-drawn cart ("gyū-sha") and a large hand-drawn cart ("Daihachi-guruma"). The use of ox-drawn carts was only permitted in Kyōto, Sunpu, Edo, and Sendai. Ox-drawn carts started appearing in Edo after couriers with oxen were summoned from Kyōto during the construction of Ankoku-den Hall in Zōjō-ji Temple. There were many houses in Takanawa that kept oxen, and it is said the number of oxen exceeded one thousand.
