Yamashita from "Guide to Famous Spots of Edo Vol.6"
Compiled by Saitō Chōshū, Painted by Hasegawa Settan 1834-1836 (Tempō 5 to Tempō 7) Kaga Collection 256

Located around today's Ueno Station, Ueno Yamashita was one of Edo's entertainment districts that developed from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The earliest entertainment district in Japan was the area around Ryōgoku, and this was then followed by the Sensō-ji Temple neighborhood, Ueno Yamashita, and Edobashi Hirokōji. The area was extremely lively with street performers gathering and show tents being set up, and people would flock to the area all year round.
