Shin-yoshiwara Nakano-chō Hassaku-no-zu from "Guide to Famous Spots of Edo Vol.6"
Compiled by Saitō Chōshū, Painted by Hasegawa Settan 1834-1836 (Tempō 5 to Tempō 7) Kaga Collection 256

Yoshihara was the only pleasure quarter in Edo. It is said to have begun in 1617 when a red-light district was formed by gathering the various brothels, which had hitherto been scattered throughout Edo town, into the vicinity of Ningyō-chō, Nihonbashi. Following the Great Fire of Meireki, the pleasure quarter was relocated to what is today's Senzoku, Taitō Ward, in August 1657. It is said that on Hassaku (August 1), the prostitutes of Yoshiwara would wear white kimonos to commemorate the entrance of Ieyasu Tokugawa into Edo Castle.
