Middle Bridge (Nakabashi) from "Guide to Famous Spots of Edo Vol. 1"
Compiled by Saitō Chōshū, Painted by Hasegawa Settan 1834-1836 (Tempō 5 to Tempō 7) Kaga Collection 256

Nakabashi was a bridge located between Nihonbashi and Kyōbashi, it spanning a canal in the area. It was also the location of the first theater developed by Nakamura Kanzaburō І (1597?-1658), the founder of Edo-style Kabuki. Records indicate that the canal was filled in as early as 1774, with the area assuming Nakabashi Hirokoji as its name. It went on to become somewhere that was very lively, being a focus for the activities of entertainers from the provinces. Its modern-day location is in the vicinity of the crossing where the Yaesu-dōri and Chuō-dōri roadways intersect.
