Hakoiri Musume Menya Ningyō
Written by Santō Kyōden and painted by Utagawa Toyokuni I 1791 (Kansei 3) Kaga Collection hako 50-9

The opening page of this volume says the publisher is "Tsutano Karamaru," a pen name used by Tsutaya Jūzaburō when writing kyōka poetry. Tsutaya was the founder of a publishing house in Edo.

It also says that the author, Santō Kyōden, had planned not to be involved in any more satirical writing after being fined in 1789 for illustrating a kibyōshi picture book titled Kokubyaku Mizukagami that made reference to a political incident. However, he agreed to write sharebon humorous narratives and kibyōshi again after being persuaded by his old acquaintance Tsutaya Jūzaburō. This explanation is a sales pitch for Tsutaya, but it does appear to have been written by Santō Kyōden himself. The Library's records show the illustrator as Utagawa Toyokuni, but this is not stated in the volume itself, and there are also theories that it was illustrated by Kitao Shigemasa, Kitao Masami, or Kitao Masanobu (a name used by Santō Kyōden himself when working as an illustrator).
