New Guide to Yoshiwara, Updated Monthly
1784 (Tenmei 4) New Acquisitions 1400
This is a yoshiwara saiken: a type of guidebook to the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters. Published by the Tsutaya Jūzaburō, it includes maps of Yoshiwara and the names of prostitutes working there.
Born and raised in Yoshiwara himself, Jūzaburō invited top literary figures of the time such as Hōseidō Kisanji and Yomono Akara (Ōta Nanpo) to contribute to the guide, and enlarged the page format to reduce the number of printed pages and keep the guide's price low. This strategy was successful, and by 1783 Tsutaya had a monopoly on the publishing of yoshiwara saiken. The one exhibited here was published in July 1784, after a fire in April of the same year destroyed the Yoshiwara district completely. It includes information on temporary relocations after the fire. Above the name of each brothel, in the area of the map indicating the street, is the name of the district where temporary premises were located at this time, such as Ryogoku Motomachi and Asakusa Sanbancho.
