This exhibition sheds light on the publishing culture that bloomed in the Edo period. You will find various aspects of people's lives through our special collections.
We also introduce Edo Castle, which was a symbolic existence of Edo, with our rare materials including Important Cultural Properties.

Exhibition outline

（1）Exhibition section 1 (Exhibition Room)
This section provides explanations about the processes involved in building the city of Edo and the Edo Castle.
The section also introduces visitors to the activities of people who supported the publishing culture in Edo through exhibits such as works by Jippensha Ikku, and draft books and letters handwritten by Takizawa Bakin, Santo Kyoden and other writers. Exhibits in this section also include publications such as nishiki-e woodblock prints, kawaraban news leaflets and newspapers, which served as information sources for the general public, in order to show how Edo transformed into Tokyo during the final years of the Edo period and transition to the Meiji era.

（2）Exhibition section 2 : Edo/Tokyo 150 Years Ago (Multipurpose Hall)
This section features exhibits that allow visitors to participate in simulations of experiences from Edo/Tokyo 150 years ago, such as an enlarged copy of a plan of Edo Castle in the final years of the Edo period, on which visitors can stroll around freely, as well as replicas of nishiki-e woodblock prints and old maps related to the Bloodless Surrender of Edo Castle and the Battle of Ueno.

Stamp rally

We hold a "stamp rally" in collaboration with the Chiyoda City Hibiya Library and Museum. Collect stamps at the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library and the Chiyoda City Hibiya Library and Museum and receive an original small writing pad. (This gift is available only while stocks last.)
