In the Special Collections Room, we have the Seien Analects Collection, which is founded by industrialist Shibusawa Eiichi .We introduce some materials related to him.

Seien Analects Collection 15

Our library's Seien Analects Collection consists mainly of materials related to the Analects of Confucius, established by the industrialist Shibusawa Eiichi (also known as Seien).
Shibusawa viewed the Analects as the basis for moral education and advocated the unity of economics and morals. Shibusawa set out to transcribe the Analects in 1923, and completed this project in 1926. The text shown here is hand-written by Shibusawa himself. (29.7×20cm)

This illustration shows a group of four industrialists, including the Chairman of the Bank of Japan Shibusawa Eiichi and the Mitsubishi Yubin-Kisen Company's Iwasaki Yatarō, discussing the provision of aid for the famine in Qing China in 1878. It appeared in the Chōya Shimbun, one of the leading newspapers in the Meiji period. Shibusawa was also involved heavily in charitable enterprises such as the operation of social welfare facilities.(33.4×23.2cm)
