As a way station on Mito Highway, Niijuku was located between Senju-shuku and Matsudo-shuku. Since the daimyo of Sankinkōtai (daimyo's alternate-year residence in Edo) stayed in Senju-shuku or Matsudo-shuku, Niijuku was a small post station with no Honjin (officially appointed inns for daimyo) or Wakihonjin (inns appointed as supplementary for Honjin). There was a ferryboat landing point for crossing Nakagawa River there.

Yūgao Kannon bodhisattva is said to have been unearthed in 1668 (the eighth year of Kanbun) by Sekiguchi Jizaemon in Iizuka Village (present-day Mizumoto Iizuka, Katsushika Ward) from the root of a pine tree near his house after he received a prophecy in a dream.

Kawarake-nage was a play of throwing unglazed or sun-dried earthenware from a high place with prayers for warding off evil and enjoying watching them flying in the wind. The place where the game was performed most often was Asuka-yama in Edo.

During the Edo period, Ōji bustled as a tourist destination for worshipping Ōji Inari Shrine and waterfall bathing. It is said that restaurants stood in line near the Otonashi River. Ebi-ya and Ōgi-ya, in particular, were listed in the restaurant ranking of the Edo period. Ebi-ya was run by the brothers of Ōgi-ya, but only Ōgi-ya remains until now.

Established as the head shrine of Inari in the Kantō Region, Ōji Inari Shrine was beloved by common people in the Edo period. It is said that Minamoto no Yoriyoshi came to worship the shrine deity when he headed towards to conquer Ōshū in Heian period, and from that time on Ōji Inari Shrine started to put together all the Inari shrines in east Japan.

Takinogawa River is another name of the Shakujii River that runs through Ōji. Since Asuka-yama was nearby, the current in this part of the river is rapid and so the area received many visitors as a nature rich resort place where some waterfalls such as Fudō-no-taki and Benten-no-taki can be seen.

Shakujii River is called Otonashi River in the surrounding area of Ōji Inari Shrine. Since the Oji Inari called upon the Kumano Gongen in Kishū (Wakayama Prefecture) and the topography of Mt. Kumano was also copied, the name of the river was also adopted from the Otonashi River in Kishū.

There is an old saying that foxes, which are believed to be the messengers of Inari, gather in Ōji Inari Shrine from all over the Kantō Region on the New Year's Eve, dress themselves under the enoki tree nearby and pay their first visits of the year. This is the origin of "Ishō-enoki". It was said that local people divined the harvest condition of the following year by the foxfire lit by foxes.

Shiohigari(Shellfish gathering at low tide) which was one of the beach activities for the people in Edo, could be seen as an annual event in March on the beaches such as Shinagawa, Shibaura, Fukagawa Suzaki. Among all Suzaki was especially crowded with many people as a famous spot for shellfish gathering.
